Britain’s Jake Wightman put on a stunning run to win gold in the 1500m at the World Championships in Oregon.
The 28-year-old overtook Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen with a brilliant final sprint and secured the title in three minutes 29:23.
Wightman looked stunned as he crossed the finish line in a world record time.
He is the first Briton to win the 1500m world title since Steve Cram in 1983.
Ingebrigtsen took silver in 3:29.47 with Spaniard Mohamed Katir third.
Wightman’s father, Geoff, is the announcer at Eugene and was able to announce his son’s victory.
“This is my son and he’s world champion,” Geoff told the Hayward Field crowd.
It was an excellent run from Wightman, who timed his last move perfectly.
With Ingebrigtsen in the lead when the bell rang, Wightman pushed forward, passing him with 200m to go and then holding him in check to take a superb gold.
He was warmly congratulated by teammate and Olympic bronze medalist Josh Kerr, who finished fifth, before turning to celebrate with his family.
