West Bromwich Albion let it go until the last second to salvage a point against Burnley when debutant Brandon Thomas-Asante came off the bench to equalize in the 97th minute.
Former Albion forward Jay Rodriguez appeared to have made a winning return to the Hawthorns when he scored from the penalty spot in the first half.
Rodriguez brought the penalty home coolly after Albion goalkeeper David Button brought down Nathan Tella when he came through clean.
On a night when Steve Bruce’s Baggies hit the woodwork twice and were unlucky in front of goal, Burnley substitute Darko Churlinov could have cleared it only to hit the post himself.
Just when it looked like Vincent Kompany’s Clarets were headed for the championship lead, Thomas-Asante, a new signing from Salford City, brought the house down midweek with his close-range finish.
While Kompany may have been irritated by the delay in Albion’s equaliser, in reality it was the very least the hosts deserved for another strong performance, even if it was the Baggies’ sixth draw in eight games this season.
An instant Hawthorns hero
Albion made a change, bringing in Taylor Gardner-Hickman at right-back, while Dara O’Shea switched to central defense in place of the injured Semi Ajayi.
Burnley made two changes, bringing back suspended Chelsea midfielder Ian Maatsen and having Brazilian winger Vitinho in the starting XI.
But it was Albion who got off to the better start – and they had just come close twice in quick succession, with Conor Townsend being denied at the near post by Burnley keeper Arijanet Muric before Kyle Bartley slammed a header into the crossbar as Burnley stole in front.
It was path one, straight out of keeper Muric’s boots, but Tella’s great first touch to trip him in his crotch was pure box office and worth a goal alone.
His next touch took him around Button, to the Albion keeper’s right, before tripping over the outstretched right leg.
The only surprise was Button staying on the pitch and only receiving a yellow card before Rodriguez, who scored 33 goals in two seasons with Albion before returning to Burnley in 2019, stepped on the spot to put a good shot in send the wrong direction. beat effort.
Albion then found the woodwork again when Jed Wallace’s left-footed shot was chipped off the post by Muric.
After the break, they saw another Bartley header rebound and a handball penalty against Taylor Harwood-Bellis went unrewarded.
Burnley should have gotten a second penalty themselves when Churlinov’s cross caught O’Shea’s outstretched arm, but their protests were brushed aside.
The visitors then missed a great chance to even it out as Townsend played a weak back pass and winger Churlinov ran clear only to hit the left post.
But Thomas-Asante always looked good after coming on for Bartley in the 70th minute. The home crowd embraced him immediately and from the last set piece of the night, with the hosts’ eighth shot on goal, he was in the right place at the right time to touch the ball home.
