World number five Ons Jabeur is in the fourth round of the US Open for the first time after parting from a serve against American Shelby Rogers.
The Tunisian, who finished second at Wimbledon earlier this year, won 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
18 year old American Coco Gauff also made the last 16, defeating compatriot Madison Keys in a superb 6-2, 6-3 win.
12th-seeded Gauff, a potential semi-final opponent for six-time champion Serena Williams, will play China Zhang Shuai in the next round.
Zhang won 6-2, 6-4 over Canada’s Rebecca Marino.
Jabeur overcomes early setback and late resistance from Rogers
Jabeur led the final set 5-1 but was broken by her American opponent trying to end the match.
However, Rogers failed to extend the lead further and Jabeur broke it again to secure their place in the last 16 at Flushing Meadows.
The 28-year-old will play against the Russians there Veronica Kudermetovaafter the 18th seed defeated Hungary’s Dalma Galfi 6-2, 6-0 in 46 minutes.
Jabeur had reached the third round at the last three US Opens, while she reached the fourth round twice at Roland Garros.
Her march to the Wimbledon final in July, where she lost to Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina, marked her longest run at a Grand Slam, having reached the quarterfinals and last eight of the Australian Open in 2020.
Gauff reached the fourth round for the first time with a smart performance, choosing her moments well to get into the net.
Keys, the 2017 runner-up, won the couple’s only previous meeting in Adelaide earlier this year.
However, Gauff said she was determined to play more aggressively in this match.
“I just told myself to go down swinging, I really wanted to get my shots done,” she said afterwards.
