The first approach came for Depay during Spurs’ negotiations with French defender Clement Lenglet – who they have been on a season-long loan from the Spanish giants.
At the time, Depay was part of Barcelona coach Xavi’s plans for the first team, but the club have been active in the summer window ever since, thus changing the situation.
