Grandpa Spence became Tottenham‘s sixth signing of the summer though Antonio Conte has revealed that he is not a player of his choice.
Spurs on Tuesday completed the long-awaited move for the 21-year-old right-back from Middlesbrough on a five-year deal and a fee of up to £20million.
“Spence is an investment by the club,” said boss Conte. “The club wanted to do it. I said, ‘OK, this player is young, but he has shown that he can become a good, important player for us.’ The club have decided to buy him.’

There are already two established right-backs at the club in Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal and Conte is busy converting striker Lucas Moura into the same role.
Tottenham chief executive Fabio Paratici personally checked on Spence last season when he helped Nottingham Forest win promotion to the Premier League while on loan from Middlesbrough.
Conte’s revelation could help explain why the transfer dragged on as opposed to the head coach’s prioritized signings, which were completed quickly.
