Luis Sinisterra scored his first Premier League goal for Leeds as they went from a goals deficit to a draw with Everton in a vibrant encounter at Elland Road.
The Colombia winger, who scored his first goal for the club in the EFL Cup after a summer move from Feyenoord last week, brought in from 18 yards after the break as Leeds put pressure on Everton.
They were greatly improved after a poor first half when Anthony Gordon scored for the second straight goal and stayed cool to slip the ball through Illan Meslier’s legs following a through ball from Alex Iwobi.
Leeds’ top scorer Rodrigo also walked off with what appeared to be an injured shoulder after a harmless tackle with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
But inspired by the impressive Jack Harrison and substitute Joe Gelhardt, Leeds ripped into their opponents only to find Pickford in top form, contesting both players and Brenden Aaronson.
When the game opened Everton had late chances to win it through Amadou Onana and Nathan Patterson.
But with Leeds continuing to press, Everton’s backline remained firm, although the result leaves the Toffees in search of their first win of the season under Frank Lampard.
Leeds turn up the style in the second half
Leeds’ second-half recovery came after an initial period in which they showed plenty of effort but found Everton’s redesigned defense too difficult to break through.
Rodrigo’s injury has also shaken her confidence as the Spain international left the pitch with some unease after a shoulder attack with Pickford.
He had his best chance in the first half when he was inches from catching an early Harrison cross, but it wasn’t until after the break that the hosts began testing Pickford.
First, Aaronson pulled a fine stop from the Everton goalkeeper before Harrison parried another try.
But the English number one could do little against Sinisterra’s efforts from the edge of the box.
It was at this point that Elland Road erupted and threatened to spill when Gordon and Rasmus Kristensen put their heads together moments later resulting in a yellow card and the two benches also collided.
At times it felt like a throwback to another era, but football was exciting as Leeds recovered from their first defeat of the season at Brighton on Saturday to show they mean business under boss Jesse Marsch and fifth in the table stayed.
