Iceland saw their Euro 2022 tournament come to an end, despite managing a dramatic draw against already qualified France as Belgium won the other group game to secure second place in Group D.
Dagny Brynjarsdottir converted a penalty in the 11th minute of added time after the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) awarded a penalty following a tangle in the penalty area.
But Belgium’s 1-0 win over Italy meant it counted for nothing as Iceland finished a point behind them in third place.
A much-changed French side, having won their last two group games to secure first place, made the perfect start to this game as they took the lead after just 46 seconds when Melvine Malard scored and a Clara pass Mateo scored.
That result was still enough to see Iceland progress provided the other game ended goalless, but that hope was dashed when Tine de Caigny gave Belgium a win over Italy.
Despite Iceland playing in Rotherham in temperatures as high as 36C, Iceland showed a good reaction from behind when Sveindis Jonsdottir hit the bar with a header from a corner.
But France showed their quality and Sandy Baltimore was denied twice to extend his lead. Malard and Grace Geyoro were also ruled out by VAR in the second half.
However, Iceland showed great resilience to fight on to the end – and were rewarded with the late penalty, expertly completed by West Ham midfielder Brynjarsdóttir.
