Cavani fell behind Cristiano Ronaldo in the pecking order at Old Trafford last season
However, that could soon change as he has been in touch with Villarreal, who reached the semi-finals of the Champions League and finished seventh in Spain’s top flight last season under manager Unai Emery.
The Uruguayan had a miserable last season at United, making just 15 league appearances and scoring just two goals.
He found himself behind Cristiano Ronaldo in the pecking order while his fitness continued to be a major concern in the second half of the season.

However, he remains a top-flight player, scoring 200 goals in his seven years with PSG while also scoring over 100 goals for Napoli.
With the World Cup just four months away, Cavani is looking to play regularly ahead of what could be his last major tournament for his country.
The forward may feel he can get some consistent playing time at Villarreal and he wouldn’t be the first veteran former Premier League player to join the club if he completes his move.
Villarreal recently signed ex-Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina after he was sacked by Lazio and they could capitalize on the free agent market again by signing Cavani.
