Brighton fought back from conceding a first-minute goal to beat ailing Leicester City in a seven-goal thriller at the Amex.
Leicester, bottom of the Premier League, scored after just 51 seconds when Kelechi Iheanacho ended a Patson Daka retreat from the left.
The lead lasted just eight minutes, however, before Solly March’s header was deflected into the net by Leicester defender Luke Thomas.
Brighton took the lead in the 15th minute and capitalized on an easy James Maddison pass, with Moises Caicedo scoring from an assist from Enock Mwepu.
But in a frantic first half, Leicester scored again after 32 minutes. Youri Tielemans played a ball over the Brighton defense deep in his own half, Daka saved Lewis Dunk’s tackle and slid the ball past Robert Sanchez to make it 2-2.
Alexis Mac Allister thought he had restored the Seagulls’ lead with a spectacular shot from 30 yards out, but after more than four minutes of review by the referee’s video assistant, the goal was finally ruled out for offside.
It did not prove decisive as Leandro Trossard scored Brighton’s third goal from a Pascal Gross pass, with Trossard then winning a penalty which Mac Allister converted for a fourth.
Fittingly, the last word went to Argentina midfielder Mac Allister, who scored his second and Brighton’s fifth goal in added time from a superb 25-yard free-kick.
The result confirms Brighton’s excellent start to the season and sits fourth in the Premier League, while Leicester are three points off the bottom of the table with just one point from six games.
The VAR is involved again
It was a Weekend packed with controversial VAR decisionsfurious with Newcastle United and West Ham after they were denied goals against Crystal Palace and Chelsea respectively on Saturday.
While the game was taking place at the Amex, the Premier League was announced review controversial decisions in these games primarily with the PGMOL refereeing committee.
VAR have been heavily involved at Amex with a long delay to decide whether to allow Mac Allister’s superb second-half strike which, if given, would have been one of the goals of the season.
Brighton’s free-kick had been played into the box, with Mwepu attempting an acrobatic overhead kick despite not touching the ball and Leicester’s James Justin partially headed clear before Mac Allister smacked the ball into the top corner.
But after the long layoff, referee Tony Harrington checked a pitchside monitor and ruled that Mwepu, who was ruled offside, had disrupted the game.
Luckily for Mac Allister, he still managed to get into the top scorer list twice. The first was a penalty down the middle after Trossard’s superb skill drew a foul from Wilfred Ndidi in the box before a stunning free-kick followed with the final action of the game.
Rate players up to 10 points during or after the game. The guesser closes 30 minutes after the final whistle.
