Euro 2022 is finally underway after the tournament was postponed a year due to the pandemic.
England are seeking victory on home soil after falling short in the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup and the Lionesses remain unbeaten since head coach Sarina Wiegman took charge – and Wiegman himself led the Netherlands to the final of that tournament.
The summer got off to a good start for England with a 1-0 win over Austria the boss praises the home care which could prove crucial throughout the tournament.
“It’s a good win and this start is so important. It gives the team and the crowd such a boost,” she said. “We had some very good moments in the game, we created a lot of chances and we should have scored a bit more goals. But we also had some difficult moments in the game and we got through it, that’s really good I think.”
Spain are seen as slight favorites to win the title, although their hopes have been dashed by the captain and Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas is missing the tournament with a cruciate ligament injury, sustained on the eve of kick-off. France and the Netherlands will also pose a major threat – though the lionesses defeated the reigning European champions 5:1 in a pre-season game – while England need to thwart Ada Hegerberg and avoid a slip against Norway in the group stage.
Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch the tournament and what games are happening each day.
