A May 14 article said a report by the Center for Crime and Justice Studies found that police were using unfair methods to increase their salaries. While the report noted that police overtime spending has increased – and said the matter was “ripe for an investigation” – the suggestion that it was caused by dishonesty or “trickery” came from the Mail, not the report . Officials can start claiming overtime 30 minutes after the end of their shift. The claim that officers make arrests outside of normal working hours to increase their payments has been made before, but we should have made it clear that this is a guess.
