SPF is a staple skin care buy to provide year-round protection from the sun’s rays, with broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection considered the gold standard. This dual SPF helps prevent premature skin aging associated with UVA rays and potentially dangerous sun damage that UVB rays can cause.
While liberal application is required to ensure full coverage, sunscreen should also be topped up regularly throughout the day to ensure optimal coverage. Whether you have already applied an entire face form or out and about in the sun, we recognize that this can be a task all too often forgotten.
step forward, suncream Sticks – the ideal way to quickly apply SPF without any mess. These handbag-sized purchases typically roll onto the skin like a hybrid sunscreen balm, providing on-the-spot sun protection. They are helpful for targeting specific areas of the face, such as the nose, ears, and eyes, and are commonly worn by skiers.
From invisible and tinted to waterproof and moisturizing, we’ve put a variety of SPF stick formulas to the test.

No7 Protect & Perfect Intense Advanced Sunscreen Stick SPF50 7.5g
Preferably: In total
Valuation: 9/10
This slim package is just a tad larger than a Lippy to slip into a small purse, but the SPF stick itself has enough width to slide across your face. There’s a dial in the base of the tube that releases the stick, and we tended to apply it to both our lips and our nose. The ingredient list includes peptides associated with improving the appearance of fine lines, and we’ve seen a smoothing, prep finish, while the formula has a soothing feel.

Clarins invisible sun care stick SPF50, 17g
Preferably: Transparent sunscreen stick
Valuation: 9/10
We were immediately drawn to the sun-orange formula of this SPF stick, which has a summery-fresh citrus scent. The packaging seems sturdy enough to slip into our bag and the twist tube releases just enough product at a time. It’s transparent on the skin and this SPF manages to strike the optimal balance to achieve smoothing coverage without creating excessive shine. Because of this, the sunscreen didn’t cause our makeup base to slip off, but instead added a subtle layer of SPF that was regularly topped up seamlessly.
We weren’t the only ones who loved this product as it’s already sold out at most retailers. Luckily, you can sign up to receive an email notifying you when it’s back.

Ultrasun Lip Protection Sunscreen Stick SPF50 4.8g
Preferably: Sunscreen stick for the eye area
Valuation: 9/10
While technically an SPF lip buy, our tester used this slim stick to fill in sunscreen around the eyes. The rotating SPF stick offers factor 50 broad spectrum protection and contains skin-soothing ingredients such as argan oil, vitamin E and shea butter. We’ve found it glides or dabs onto skin with ease, providing buildable product coverage that’s lightweight on the delicate skin around the eyes. Our tester also likes the subtly sweet, creamy scent.

Soltan Kids Suncare Roll-On sunscreen stick SPF50+, 50ml
Preferably: Affordable sunscreen stick
Valuation: 9/10
This SPF has a roll-on applicator that releases a factor 50 liquid Soltan suntan lotion that’s a lot less messy than squeezing it out of a bottle. We found the chunky shape covered our entire body well, including reaching under the arms and legs. As a sun protection factor for children, we applied the roll-on stick to our entire family during a day at the beach. It’s water repellent for extra sun protection, although we made sure to apply extra SPF after going in the sea. The bargain price also earns extra points.

Piz Buin Berg sunscreen and lipstick, 20ml and 2.3ml
Preferably: Multitasking sunscreen pen
Valuation: 8/10
This multitasking SPF consists of two components – the nozzle, which releases an SPF50 cream, and an SPF30 lipstick in the cap of the tube. You can switch between the two depending on which area of your face you’re focusing on, and the stick is ideal for the lips. The stick element is quite small in relation to the rest of the SPF tube, but its rounded shape hugs the lips perfectly, leaving behind a thick, creamy scented coating thanks to ingredients like synthetic wax and vanilla. We appreciated this effect on days when our lips were chapped.

Sun Bum Sunscreen Stick Face SPF30, 13g
Preferably: Vegan friendly sunscreen stick
Valuation: 7.5/10
This broad-spectrum SPF30 stick smells like banana and contains soothing ingredients like vitamin E and aloe. The twist stick is very easy to use and gives off a transparent, balmy SPF that we smoothed over the skin on our face. It’s pretty handy to also cover places like the tips of the ears. However, we made sure to keep it out of direct sunlight to avoid melting the stick. A vegan-friendly purchase that’s water-resistant, the stick has a remarkably lightweight carry-on case.

Hello Sunday to take away an invisible sunscreen stick SPF30, 30g
Preferably: Waterproof sunscreen stick
Valuation: 7.5/10
As the name suggests, this sunscreen stick is completely transparent on the skin. We’re fans of the refreshing citrus scent, the fun purple packaging and how effortlessly the stick glides over the face and body. Lightweight and suitable for sensitive skin, we think that because the formula is enriched with oils and has a slight oiliness, it works best on dry patches. The hefty stick is both sweat and water resistant and is a decent size that would last forever.

Sisley Super Sunscreen Stick Solaire Teinte SPF50+, 15g
Preferably: Luxurious sunscreen stick
Valuation: 8/10
This SPF-buy treat is also tinted to cleverly double as a semi-matte makeup base, which we found particularly impressive. The mineral sunscreen contains moisturizing ingredients shea butter and mango seed butter. Our tester found that the emollient SPF stick creates even coverage that evens out the complexion and doesn’t budge at all. The waterproof formula is a smoothing, tinted SPF50 stick that stays in place without the product sliding off. We also loved how fresh our skin looked with it.

supergoop! Glow Sunscreen Stick SPF50, 20g
Preferably: Moisturizing sunscreen stick
Valuation: 8/10
Presented in a twist-up tube, this clear, broad-spectrum stick has a hydrating finish made with nourishing ingredients like Amazonian oil. We saw a radiant effect with no excess product residue and the formula absorbed into the skin without feeling greasy. In addition to covering our face, we also applied it to our neck, cleavage and shoulders as sun protection throughout the day. Our tester noticed a dew when using it, and this pencil doubled as a highlighter for our cheekbones and cupid’s bow.

La Roche Posay Anthelios XL SPF50 Sunscreen Stick 9g
Preferably: Sunscreen stick for minimal odor
Valuation: 9/10
This white SPF50 stick comes in a lightweight twist tube with silver details. Our tester found the formula spreads easily across face and body and absorbs well. We didn’t notice any chalking after application, and the SPF didn’t need to be rubbed in much either. Made with ingredients like shea and cocoa butter, the buttery finish feels soothing even on our irritable skin. There is also only a slight odor which would be ideal if you prefer SPF with minimal fragrance.
